Evan 2017, Southampton, UK

Following the success of the first international conference on Advances in Extreme Value Analysis and application to Natural Hazard (EVAN) in Siegen Germany in 2013 and the second conference in Santander Spain in 2015, we are pleased to announce the dates of the third conference to take place in Southampton, UK.

The conference will take place from Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 September 2017 at the National Oceanography Centre. The overall aim of the conference is to bring together and promote interchange between a diverse community of research scientists, students, practitioners and stakeholders concerned with this complex and inter-disciplinary topic.

Special issue – Natural Hazards

We are pleased to announce that we have organised a special issue with the journal Natural Hazards. All presenters, oral or poster, are invited to submit manuscripts on the work they are presenting at the conference. This is not compulsory, but we are hoping to receive a good number of interesting papers reflecting the broad scope of the conference.

To help us plan for the special issue we ask, when you complete the registration form, to indicate whether or not you are interested in contributing a manuscript. If you are interested then please include a tentative title. Note, this is not a firm commitment, nor a guarantee for the paper being published. All manuscripts will go through the normal peer-review process.

Full papers will need to be submitted three months after the conference in December 2017.

Hackathon – Friday 8th September 2017

Following the main conference, we encourage you to bring your laptops, data, code and unanswered questions to the Statistics of Natural Hazards Hackathon on Friday 8th September 2017. This will be a practical and informal day to share ideas and statistical approaches by working on real data, learn from multiple disciplines, spin up new collaborations, and to analyse real natural hazards data to try and answer key questions. Any datasets are welcomed, ranging from incomplete, small sample size and disparately-sourced through to “Big Data” and that concern any aspect of natural hazards (e.g. controls/forcing, probability, magnitude, impact, risk etc.). Key note speaker – Dr. Kate White

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Kate White will be our key note speaker on the first day of the conference. Kate leads the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Climate Preparedness and Resilience Community of Practice. She holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, is a registered professional engineer, and has almost 30 years of experience in the USACE.

Kate’s work includes development of policy, technical guidance, methods, and tools to support climate preparedness and resilience, with an emphasis on water resources management issues involving extreme events and natural hazards. She received a 2013 GeenGov Presidential Award: Climate Champion for her role in the interagency team that developed the Sea Level Rise Tool for Sandy Recovery. She was selected as the USACE 2014 Elvin R. “Vald” Heiberg III “Engineer of the Year,” and was a 2015 Top Ten Federal Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers.
